The Slovak had an early break and appeared to be in command of the opening set until Podoroska created her own break. Schmiedlova, on the other hand, replied by breaking again and serving out to claim the opening set.

When Schmiedlova won the first four games of the second set, the match was effectively over, and she was able to coast to the finish line.

Zhang won the doubles title at this event last year with partner Samantha Stosur, and she has previously reached the third round in singles twice.

She was drawn against the Swiss number 30 seed, Jil Belen Teichmann, in the first round, but she handled the task with reasonable ease.

Zhang was the first to drop her serve in the first set, but she quickly struck back to level, and then broke again. Teichmann got a break opportunity with Zhang serving for the set, but she couldn't take it and quickly fell behind.

When the Swiss lost her serve again early in the second set, she knew the writing was on the wall. But, just for kicks, Zhang broke her again and then served her out.

Zhang has far more Grand Slam experience than her opponent and should ensure that Schmiedlova's latest campaign ends in the second round once more.
