Team USA went as favorites, and with the Canadians out of the competition, there were no other genuine contenders for the title. They have triumphed on five previous occasions, most recently in 2021. Finland's U-20 team has also won the World Cup on five occasions, but the last time was in 2019, after which their results went downhill. Since then, they have won one silver and one bronze and were knocked out in the 2023 World Championship quarter-finals. Finland also had a poor start at the 2024 World Competition, losing 5:2 and 4:3 to Canada and Germany full-time. It looked as if the Suomi side would have to fight for survival in the world's elite, but they then defeated the Latvians 4:0, beat the Swedes 5:4 on penalties to finish third in their group, and beat the Slovaks 4:3 in the quarter-finals.

Team USA came into the World Championship 2024 as the favorites, and they have only proved that status by winning all five of their games so far at the tournament by a combined score of 36:11, while their opponents have either been eliminated or left with modest performances. The day before, the USA had fun against the Latvians in their quarter-final, beating them 7:2. 

The USA team has been playing bright, attacking hockey since the start of the tournament two weeks ago, and they are still doing so. The Stars and Stripes have already played 14 games, registering 131 shots on goal (an average of 9.36 per game), a staggeringly high figure for such a long haul. At the same time, the Americans have scored 87 goals, averaging 6.21 per game.
