Pittsburgh continues to fight earnestly for the playoffs. In mid-March, it was hard to believe when the Penguins traded for Jake Guentzel and began to suffer one setback after another, reaching the group of league outsiders. At that point, it was as if they were pushing off the bottom, and then the results took a turn for the worse. Mike Sullivan's wards have now gone nine consecutive games without a point. They have won six of those games but have also lost three in overtime to Colorado 4:5, Columbus 3:4, and Toronto 2:3. The Penguins are tenth in the Eastern Conference standings but only one point out of the top 8.
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit is another team currently on the edge of the Cup Eight but still has a chance to make the playoffs. The Wings are in a very different situation. At the end of February, they went on another incredible winning streak, and there was no doubt they would finally make it to the Stanley Cup. Instead, they started dropping points in droves. They began with a seven-game losing streak in regulation. Then they started to get better, but in their last eight games, they allowed six more goals and only beat Tampa Bay and Buffalo 4:2 and 3:1. Detroit is in ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Expert Betting Tips
Pittsburgh and Detroit are tied for tenth and ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 84 points each after 78 games. They are just one point out of the Cup Final Eight, so their matchup is enormous. The favorites in this pairing look like the Wings, who have been great in recent head-to-head meetings, winning five of the last seven. In addition, the Pennsylvanians have expended a lot of energy and emotion in the recent stretch and have an older roster.
The Pittsburgh-Detroit confrontation has often provided us with productive, and spectacular hockey. In the past nine meetings, the rivals have combined to score 76 goals, averaging 8.44 per game, which is incredibly high even by NHL standards. Additionally, the Penguins and Red Wings have each scored at least three goals in five of their last seven meetings. Now, despite the importance of the battle, there shouldn't be any problems with goals.
