Edmonton Oilers vs Vancouver Canucks Prediction: Canucks to win a hard away game

On October 13, 2022, the Rogers Palace will host a regular season NHL game in which local Oilers will take on Maple Leafs. The game is scheduled to start at 05:00 (UTC+3).

The Edmonton Oilers are a NHL all-star team, but so far they can't win anything. Not counting, of course, the individual honors, of which Connor McDavid has already accumulated enough. That said, last season his Oilers finally had a major breakthrough, although by the middle of the regular season they were out of the playoff zone. Then the Blue and Orange were led by Jay Woodcroft under whom they first made their way to the cup battles, then passed Los Angeles and Calgary, but could not cope with Colorado, losing the series 0-4. Edmonton played eight friendly games over the summer, winning five of them.

Vancouver failed to make the playoffs last regular season, finishing within five points of the Western Conference's top eight. The first half of the season was a decent one, but they lost their place and finished in tenth place. In the offseason, the Blue and Greens tried to strengthen the lineup, and their choice fell on the Russian hockey players which in recent years were not so much in this club. A year ago we could see only Vasily Podkolzin, but now his teammates are Andrei Kuzmenko and Ilya Mikheyev. Vancouver played seven friendlies this summer with only two wins.

Throughout NHL history, the teams have played 262 head-to-head encounters. The Oilers have 135 wins to their credit, while the Canucks were stronger in 108 games, 19 games a draw. The goal difference is also on the side of the Blue and Orange, 941-835. During the last regular season the opponents met four times and all four times it was Edmonton that won: 3-2, 2-1, 3-2, and 3-2.

Edmonton and Vancouver are teams that have gone in different directions in the last six months. While previously their level of ambition was comparable, the Oilers made it to the Western Conference Finals in the spring and the Canucks did not make the playoffs at all. Now the Blue and Orange team is a favorite for the upcoming game as they have a better roster and have looked solid in preseason friendlies while the Green and Blues have lost five of seven games. As a result, we have to bet on Edmonton to win for around 1.90.

Vancouver is a very young team that strives to play bright and attacking hockey. If you look at their results at the finish of the last regular season, their last nine matches saw 67 goals scored (7.44 average per game), which even by the standards of the NHL is a very solid figure. Edmonton also have performers on their roster who will try to chip in for the league's top scorers from the very first game, so they obviously won't shut down on defense. Based on this, the optimal option seems to be Total Over (6.5) pucks at odds of around 2.00.
