One of the NHL's most popular franchises hasn't been at the top for a long time. However, the previous season certainly inspired optimism in Red Wings fans. The team had a great first half of the regular season, largely intentionally stopping in the second half. That may not be the case in the new season, as Detroit will be a playoff contender to the very last.
The Red Wings will have a new coach in the new championship - Derek Lalonde, a two-time Stanley Cup winner as Jon Cooper's assistant in Tampa Bay, has taken Jeff Blashill's place. Among Detroit's rookie players of note are another champion, with St. Louis forward David Perron; Czech offensive talent from the Chicago Blackhawks, Dominik Kubalik. Another experienced forward, Andrew Copp; defensemen Olli Määttä and Ben Chiarot. The Red Wings really seem to be targeting the playoffs.
Montreal had a very bright game
The first game of the season turned out to be a glorious one for the Canadiens. Martin St. Louis's team battled back twice against bitter rival Toronto and eventually pulled out a win. Josh Anderson scored the decisive goal 19 seconds before the final siren. Cole Caufield scored a double for Montreal, and an experienced rookie Sean Monahan put in another goal. A great start to the championship!
Injuries and suspensions
- Detroit: Robby Fabbri will not play;
- Montreal: Joel Armia, Paul Byron and Carey Price will not play. Joel Edmundson is questionable.
Expert Betting Tips
Detroit strengthened great in the offseason and, probably, from the very first game will begin to prove high ambitions. Moreover, it will happen in front of the home crowd, which has been waiting for their favorites to solve serious problems. So it is unlikely that Montreal will be able to repeat the success of the game with Toronto. Also, the Canadiens' mindset against the Red Wings won't be as exorbitant as that of the Maple Leafs.
Prediction: Detroit will be closer to winning.
