Chicago is coming off an incredibly tough regular season. Nearly all the leaders of the past few years have left the club, which is still rebuilding its roster, and promising young players have yet to gain enough experience to solve any real problems. Things have picked up since then, though, as they have started to win more often, with four wins and three losses in their last seven games. So far, the Kings remain in eighth place in the Western Conference standings.

Chicago and Los Angeles end the regular season with entirely different levels of tournament motivation. The Hawks have none, as they have been hopeless underdogs all season, not even trying to contend for a Cup. The Kings have a completely different situation as they continue to fight for a playoff spot and sit in a borderline eighth-place spot in the Western Conference. The Californians have more skills and experience and have won four last five games. 

The confrontation between Chicago and Los Angeles has been unusually stingy lately. In the four previous meetings, the opponents have combined for just 12 pucks (3.00 average per game) - a meager number by North American hockey standards. The Hawks have been poor offensively, allowing just four goals (1.00 average per game).
