Manchester City are the reigning Champions League winners. Pep Guardiola's team kicked off their title defense in the playoffs against Danish side Copenhagen and, as expected, beat their inferior opponents easily - 3:1 away, 3:1 at home. The Citizens also came out on top in their first quarter-final match against Real Madrid. The City took a quick 1:0 lead, conceded twice before the break, but doubled their lead early in the second half. Only Federico Valverde's superb strike prevented them from winning - 3:3. However, a draw away from home is a good result.
Between the games against Real Madrid, Manchester City played a home game against Luton Town and won 5:1. The Citizens took sole possession of the top spot in the APL after taking advantage of slip-ups by Arsenal and Liverpool.
Real Madrid
The first round of the playoffs pitted Real against Leipzig of Germany. Carlo Ancelotti's team won the first away game 1:0 in their usual relaxed style but drew 1:1 at home to progress. The first match against Manchester City was tough for Real Madrid. Madrid managed to hold on for a draw, but that is not the best result for a home game. Real Madrid didn't have many chances to win.
Real Madrid also played a league game over the weekend, beating Mallorca, one of the best defenses in the Spanish league, 1:0. They are at the top of the standings and have maintained their eight-point advantage over the second-placed side.
Expert Betting Tips
Real Madrid is never to be underestimated in the Champions League, but Manchester City was simply the better team today. Pep Guardiola's team have had more chances to win away from home and will be keen to finish what they started at home. We expect a repeat of last year's Champions League tie when the Citizens thrashed Real 4:0 at home after a 1:1 draw in Madrid.
