Having started September winless in the Championship, Preston North End took four points from two games in October ahead of an international break. They registered three goals at Deepdale against Watford and held promotion favorites Burnley to a goalless draw. In the closely fought Lancashire derby, possession was clearly with Burnley, but Preston equalized and, at times, were still ahead through Danish striker Emil Riis Jakobsen, whose goal was disallowed for offside.

Preston are nine points clear after ten Championship games this term and sit in 19th position in the 2024-25 table. They remain seven points from sixth-placed Watford and just two clear of Queens Park Rangers who are seeking to fight their way off the relegation zone.

Since Ryan Lowe left as manager early into the season, only two out of nine games that Paul Heckingbottom has overseen resulted in a loss. In search of the sense of triumph he once experienced while managing Sheffield United, he took them to the Premier League.

Preston haven't managed to get any of the five away games in the Championship going so far this campaign, but they have a very friendly fixture list going forward, with five of their next six games at Deepdale, including an EFL Cup fourth-round tie against Mikel Arteta's Arsenal on 30 October.

Having concluded last season as ninth best in the Championship, having also made it to the FA Cup semi-finals, things are being a bit problematic for Coventry City in the second tier this season. Having commenced their 2024-25 season with two wins from their opening nine matches, they lie 20th in the league table going into the encounter against Sheffield Wednesday, who were beaten by Blackburn Rovers last month. Jack Rudoni remains Coventry's shining light, but it's tough to be optimistic regarding scoring when that has yet to be attained that any other player has scored more than once in the league. Coventry has generally had a dreadful record against Preston in their last few encounters, so it might not have been the most promising opening salvo for the Sky Blues heading into their game against Preston where the North-West team appears to look to extend their history of remaining unbeaten for 14 matches. It has been a long time for Coventry to beat Preston since the last victory took place in January 2013.

Preston made a cracking start to October before the international break, and plenty of reasons to go into this weekend feeling optimistic that they can continue their good form. Coventry haven't won away in the Championship this season. Chances are that is not going to happen now against anyone in Lancashire against a side playing so well as their opponents are at the moment.
