Tundra Esports' defense of the title last year was disappointing, with the team finishing 13th and 16th at the Seattle tournament, prompting a significant roster overhaul. Topson was the only player left from the previous year's team, and the new team structure was built around him. Tundra sought to attract the best mechanically gifted players to support Topson's unique style of play in Dota 2.
However, due to the strong personalities of the players, the roster-building process proved challenging. In February, at the first tournament of the year, DreamLeague Season 22, the team experienced drama when offliner Ivan 'MinD_ContRoL' Ivanov was eliminated after the first day of play. During the season, Tundra used five offlaners, but despite the difficulties, the team consistently placed in the top 8 in tournaments. With the arrival of Roman RAMZES666 Kushnarev, Tundra finished 4th at the Riyadh Masters 2024 and 3rd at FISSURE Universe: Episode 3. With the current roster, Tundra has the potential to finish in the top 4 at TI13, given their ability to adapt to the new meta and creative strategies. The team will be without 9Class in Denmark, but replacing him with Saksa will not be a problem.
Talon Esports
Last year, Talon Esports was the best Southeast Asian team, achieving outstanding results and coming into TI12 with high expectations. After reaching the top 3 at the Major and the Riyadh Masters 2023, the team unexpectedly crashed out of the Seattle tournament, finishing 9th-12th, leading to a complete roster overhaul. Four of the five former Talon players reunited under the Aurora banner, and Talon Esports started from scratch, building a new roster with promising players from the SEA region. By the end of 2023, the team was fully formed, and in January, an experienced coach from Western Europe, pieliedie, joined the team to help them reach TI13 in no time.
The new Talon squad is led by the most experienced player, Mikoto, who triumphantly returned to the team just before the TI13 regional qualifiers. His deep understanding of the game and the fresh strengths he brought to the team were instrumental in their success. Despite the inexperience of most of their players, including 19-year-old offlayer Ws and 21-year-old Carry Akashi, Talon has shown a willingness to develop unexpected and creative strategies. The team is actively testing new heroes and is ready to surprise at the tournament. Their unpredictability and desire to try new tactics make them one of the most exciting outsiders in TI13.
