This Saturday, the Euro 2024 round of 16 enters its second tie of matches. Germany welcomes Denmark to Signal Iduna Park, and Die Mannschaft will be aiming to book their place in the quarterfinals for the first time since Euro 2016. Switzerland, on the other hand, plays host to defending champions Italy at the Olympiastadion. The Swizz's last meeting with Italy in this competition saw them succumb to a 3-0 defeat, and it's safe to say they come into this match with the goal of exacting revenge.

Switzerland vs. Italy

Switzerland were minutes away from pulling off an upset against Germany and taking the top spot in Group A on Sunday. However, Niclas Fullkrug's equalizer at the death door saw them play out a 1-1 draw in Frankfurt. This ultimately led to them settling for a second-place finish in Group A with five points accumulated from three games, which was more than enough confirmation for their advancement in the knockout stages. Despite finishing as runners-up, the Swizz are eyeing their second straight quarterfinal berth in this competition.

The defending champions, Italy, come into this match with just one defeat from their last nine international matches. However, despite this laudable run, it has to be said that the Azzuri dodged a bullet in their most recent match against Croatia on the third match day of the Euro 2024, which saw them minutes away from relinquishing their title by being victims of a premature exit. In that match, they were trailing behind by Luka Modrić's goal in the 55th minute; however, Mattia Zaccagni's equalizer in stoppage time ensured them a second-place finish in Group B and guaranteed them a fifth successive knockout appearance at the Euros.

Italy has not lost to Switzerland in their last nine international encounters and will be aiming to extend that unbeaten run. The defending champions have yet to suffer elimination in the Euros round of 16 and could use this as leverage to book their place in the quarterfinals. However, this could turn out to be a tight affair, and we anticipate a low-scoring affair where the total will not surpass 2.5 goals.

Al Ittihad vs. El Daklyeh

After 27 rounds, Al Ittihad sits ninth with 36 points in the standings and is two points clear of tenth-placed Zamalek and three points adrift of seventh-placed Smouha. In the last round, they lost 1-0 to Pharco away from home, extending their winless run across all competitions to six matches (L4, D2).

El Daklyeh, on the other hand, is rooted at the bottom of the table in 18th place within the relegation zone. With 18 points accumulated from 27 matches, they are seven points adrift of safety. In the last round, they defeated ZED 1-0 at home to halt a two-match losing streak in the league.

Both sides have been in poor form in the league, and a tight affair is highly anticipated at the Alexandria Stadium. In their last eight encounters, goals have been seen at both ends of the pitch in five of those matches, and we anticipate the same trend to continue here.

Germany vs. Denmark

Considered genuine contenders for the trophy, Germany had already secured their progression to the knockout stages by winning their first two opening games, scoring seven goals in the process and conceding one. In the last round, they locked horns with Switzerland in Frankfurt and could only salvage a point in a 1-1 draw to solidify their top spot in Group A. Die Mannschaft are currently unbeaten in their last seven international matches (W5, D2) and will be aiming to capitalize on that momentum to secure a comfortable win against their opponents in this impending encounter and book their place in the quarterfinals for the first time since Euro 2016.

Denmark, on the other hand, against all odds, finished as runners-up in GroupC by accumulating three points from three consecutive draws. In the last round, they played out a goalless draw against Serbia at the Allianz Arena.

Denmark are aiming to emulate their 2020 success at the Euros by reaching the semi-finals; however, standing in their way is a formidable opponent that is considered a contender for the trophy. The Danes run in the group stages suggests that they'll likely struggle for a favorable outcome in this one, and as such, we expect a routine win for Germany when all is said and done, as they are the better side on paper.
