The US Open events permit only spectators who have at least taken one dose of the vaccine for coronavirus, meanwhile this mandate doesn’t apply for the contestants participating in the tennis games. Victoria Azarenka termed this no-vaccine mandate for players as “bizarre” when it is a must for the spectators to display the proof of vaccination.
She had the following to say during the US Open’s press conference-"I don't see the point of stalling it, because we all want to be safe, we all want to continue doing our jobs, and I know there are a lot of discussions about it”. Azarenka also said, “I feel that that part of conversation that, really, you need to be knowledgeable to what you're saying is missing in a lot of players”. The comments come in the backdrop of earlier comments by some top tennis stars such as Djokovic, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, and Zverev who have continued to be skeptical about getting vaccinated.
