The prestige of an event depends on its quality, not its frequency: Robert Infantino

FIFA’s president Robert Infantino has defended FIFA’s desire to hold a world cup every two years. He argued that the tournament is of such quality that its frequency will not allow the interest of the fans to dissipate. To make his point home, he quoted the examples of Wimbledon, Champions League, and Super Bowl, that occur every year.

Various clubs and organizations have opposed the proposal for a biennial World Cup because it can make for a tenuous calendar and can cause financial fluctuations. However, FIFA seems adamant about pushing this plan from the 2026 World Cup, which is also going to feature 48 teams.

Definitely believe in having more prestigious events, whether the World Cup or anything else. Precisely because it is a magic tournament is perhaps why it should happen more often. The prestige of an event depends on its quality, not its frequency. You have the Super Bowl every year, Wimbledon or the Champions League every year, and everyone is excited and waiting for it. We would like to increase the value of national championships and domestic leagues. We need to find the right format that won't be too disruptive to the calendar and all the other events.
