Sri Lanka’s first test captain Bandula Warnapura has taken his last breath due to high blood sugar levels. Bandula’s international career spanned from 1975-1982 and although he did become the first Test captain of Sri Lanka, he had a better ODI career by a stretch. Although taking the context into the account, he got blacklisted by the cricket community when he led a Sri Lanka team to tour apartheid plagued and a banned South African side in the 1982-83 session.

Warnapura’s highest test score remained 38, the one he made in Sri Lanka’s maiden test match against England. He made 180 runs in 12 ODI innings, with the highest score of 77. Bandula also took eight wickets in nine ODI innings, at an economy of 4.57. Sri Lankan players will wear armbands when they face Namibia in their first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Match.
