Former Indian batter Rahul Dravid has emerged as the number one candidate for the position of head coach for India’s men’s cricket team. Ravi Shastri, the current Indian coach has declared to retire next month after the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Dravid is touted as the favorite for the job because the governing body BCCI itself has been persuading him to succeed Shastri.

As per sources, if Dravid puts in an application then he is an automatic selection for the BCCI, so the choice is mostly dependent upon him. Dravid coached a second-string Indian unit when the team toured Sri Lanka and that led to the speculations that he is going to take over the role eventually. Dravid has refused the permanent role of the head coach before but reports suggest that BCCI is not giving up in his pursuit.

Known for his serene batting style that earned him the nickname “The Wall”, the defensive batter made 13288 runs in 286 test innings at an average of 52.31. He grabbed 36 centuries, 63 fifties in the format, with his highest test score being 270. Rahul also made 10889 runs in the 318 ODI innings at an average of 39.16.
