The 46-year-old Kostomarov was hospitalized with signs of pneumonia in a serious condition on January 10, and two weeks later he was put in a medically induced coma and connected to a ventilation system and ECMO. The former figure skater regained consciousness, but because of the blood supply disorder, Kostomarov developed necrosis and sepsis, which provoked gangrene in his legs and led to the amputation of his left foot.

On February 8, figure skater Oksana Domnina wished her husband happy birthday and also asked the media not to disturb Kostomarov's relatives and friends until he recovers.
