Double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet says she will try to break the 5,000m World Record again, after missing out on her first attempt at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday night.

Chebet had laid out an ambitious plan on taking an assault at the 14:00.12 world mark set by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon last year, but came short, only managing to run a world lead and a meet record in Zurich.

The 24-year-old clocked 14 minutes, 9.52 seconds to win the 5,000m race at the penultimate round of the Diamond League.

When you focus on what you want, you can achieve it. I had focused on just coming here and trying to break the world record. It was not easy but it is always good to give something a try and see how it goes. I tried but I didn’t manage it but I am going back to prepare, see what I did and how I can improve and then try it again. It is just a matter of time.

said Chebet, speaking to Telecomasia.net

Having won gold in both the 5,000m and the 10,000m at the Olympic Games in Paris just three weeks ago, Chebet had to battle with some tired legs.

For me, it was a good race and winning it was amazing. The season has been great, and I am happy with how it is ending.
