The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has reported data loss, distortion, or errors in approximately 2,000 cases, including over 900 doping tests. This issue was discovered just days before the 2024 Olympics, as reported by The New York Times.
According to sources, due to these problems, WADA was no longer able to accurately determine which cases needed monitoring, and lawyers began to doubt whether the agency's staff were handling athletes' cases correctly. These issues were revealed during a meeting in May 2024.
Shortly after, WADA issued a statement: “extensive work was carried out by the I.T. department to remedy the situation, making it now more efficient and effective for legal to review cases.”
The agency also announced that it can now track cases using a combination of other databases. A former anti-doping official indicated that the database issues had not been resolved by the time the Games began.
