Kenya Lionesses head coach Dennis Mwanja believes the team can replicate their male counterparts by one day playing in the World Rugby Sevens Series. The men’s team was promoted back to the top tier last season after one season in the second tier, and Mwanja believes the women can follow suit.
The Kenyan girls will begin their campaign for Series qualification with the opening two rounds of the Challenger Series matches to be played in South Africa. For the first tournament, Kenya is drawn in Pool B with Poland and Samoa.
Speaking to Telecomasia.net, Mwanja is confident that the team has ability to earn good results from these first two rounds.
It has been our ambition every year to try and qualify for the World Series and I believe we can do it this time. We have a very good squad and have had ample time to train and prepare. The motivation and belief is there and these are the two ingredients I believe are key for us to progress. The men definitely do inspire us and we want to pick from their motivation and make our own history.

A top four finish in the overall standings of the Challenger Series will see the team advance to the play-off tournament, where the winners qualify for the series. Mwanja’s primary target at the moment, is to make the top four.
