Leading Chinese swimmers competed in the recent Summer Olympics in Tokyo, despite failing doping tests, reports ARD journalist Nick Butler. The Games, postponed for a year, saw Chinese swimmers take home three gold, two silver, and one bronze medals.
According to Butler, among them were Zhang Yufei, Wang Shun, and Qin Haiyang. It was revealed that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine. The same substance led to the suspension of figure skater Kamila Valieva for four years. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) allowed their participation based on the explanation from the Chinese side, which found traces of trimetazidine in food the athletes had in hotels.
