No. 4 in the UFC lightweight rankings, American fighter Dustin Poirier answered a question about retiring after his loss to division champion Islam Makhachev.

On June 2 in Newark (USA) as part of the UFC 302 tournament, Poirier lost to Makhachev by submission (D'arce choke) in the fifth round. Earlier, Dustin said that regardless of how the fight with Islam ends, it could be the last fight of his career.

Poirier said in a post-fight interview:

If I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times. I’ve got a little girl, I’m 35 years old, this might be it. I think this might be it.

The 35-year-old Poirier previously stepped into the octagon at UFC 299 in March 2024, defeating Benoit Saint-Denis by knockout in the second round. He has 30 wins and nine losses on his record. One fight was ruled a no contest.

Makhachev, 32, last fought at UFC 294 in October 2023, defeating Alexander Volkanovski by first-round knockout. He has 26 wins and one loss on his record.
