Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman stated that the BMF title, currently held by Max Holloway, was conceived ahead of his fight against Colby Covington.
Usman shared on the Pound 4 Pound show:
Why are we talking about this like this is a real title? It’s not. This was a hypothetical that was made up because of me. Let’s not forget that myself and Covington were supposed to fight in MSG in New York. So at that point, what’s the hottest ticket out there? Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal, the hottest thing smoking. Of course, you have Nate Diaz with his mystique that he always carries. Dana jumps on, ‘How do we promote this fight? Let’s create this, alright, it’s called the baddest motherf’er belt…’ That’s why it started.
Usman’s last fight took place in October 2023 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, where he faced famous fighter Khamzat Chimaev, who currently represents the UAE. In this match, which went the distance, Kamaru lost by a majority decision. He holds a mixed martial arts record of 20 wins and four losses.
