National Hockey League (NHL) Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly commented on the Russian forward of the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin's opinion on the military operation.

Alexander is in a very difficult situation. He doesn't condone the special operation (the wording has been changed to match the official position of the Russian Federation). He wants peace, but he has family in Russia. A photo with Putin has been on his social networks for years, and if he changed it in response to what is happening in Ukraine, it would be a political statement. I should note that the way Alex spoke about the special operation (the wording was changed to match the official position of the Russian Federation) satisfied North American media.

Ovechkin is a ward of Dynamo Moscow and has played for Washington since 2005. In 2018, the Russian won the Stanley Cup with the capital's team. Ovechkin has 780 goals in the NHL, which is the third most in history. The Washington captain is second only to Gordie Howe (801) and Wayne Gretzky (894).
