Lee Elder passed away at the age of 87. His cause of death is still unknown. Elders has the distinction of being the first-ever black player to participate in a Master’s tournament. He did so when de debuted in 1975. He couldn’t make it to the final cut back then but he broke many barriers after being the first black person to ever make Golf’s biggest stage. He got the invitation for the 1975 Master’s tournament after he had won the Monsanto Open back in 1974. Elders, who along with Harper opened a Lee Elder Scholarship program in 1974 to aid black folks financially for college education. Golfing stalwart Tiger Woods has named Lee Elder as one of his major inspirations.
