Ex-FIFA President Sepp Blatter and UEFA’s former boss Michal Platini have faced criminal charges for fraud after Swiss prosecutors argued that two engaged in the illegitimate transfer of money. The prosecutors claim that Sepp transferred 2 million Swiss francs to Platini in 2011 which unlawfully enriched Platini and damaged FIFA’s assets. Both Platini and Blatter are facing a trial at a court in Bellinoza.
If both of the former bosses are found guilty then they are set to receive imprisonment and heavy fines. The investigation has been running since 2015 and as a result, Blatter had to step down as the FIFA chief after eighteen years of tenure five years ago. Platini’s lawyer Dominic Nellen said that the investigation should have stopped long ago and that his client is innocent.
