Roberto Rosetti, the Union of European Football Associations' director of refereeing, has asked that goalkeepers not be appointed as team captains at the European Championships in order to simplify communication between referee and team.

Importantly, we want only the captain from the team who wishes to discuss a decision to be able to approach the referee. It is the responsibility of the captain to ensure his teammates respect the referee, keep their distance and do not surround him. Any teammate ignoring his captain’s role and/or who approaches the referee showing any sign of disrespect or dissent will be shown a yellow card.

Rosetti added that if the captain is the goalkeeper, teams need to nominate a player who can approach the referee if an incident occurs at the other end of the pitch.

The European Championship will take place from 14 June to 14 July in Germany. The opening game will take place at the Allianz Arena in Munich, where the German and Scottish teams will play.

Late last year, at a special ceremony at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, it was announced that Italy and Turkey would host the 2032 European Championship at their stadiums.
