Former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales was detained at the airport in Spain on an arrest warrant issued by the country's prosecutor's office. This was reported by the publication Sport.es.
The detention came after searches in the building of RFEF, conducted as part of the investigation into the case of the contract with Saudi Arabia. The contract provided for the holding of the Spanish Super Cup in this country.
The Spanish prosecutor's office suspects Rubiales of corruption and money laundering in making the deal. According to the contract with Saudi Arabia, RFEF received 40 million euros annually.
Recall, the Prosecutor's office also demands 2.5 years in prison for Rubiales for unconsented kissing Spanish national team player Jennifer Hermoso after the victory in the Women's World Cup-2023.
It was previously reported that the functionary would be arrested upon his return to the country.
Rubiales was dismissed from his position at RFEF and suspended from football activities for three years for kissing Hermoso.
