Portugal's national team captain and forward Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken to the fans of the team following their departure from the Euro 2024 championships.
On July 5 in Hamburg, under the guidance of Roberto Martinez, the Portuguese squad lost to France in a penalty shootout in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals (0:0 in regular time, 3:5 on penalties), ending their run at the continental tournament. The 39-year-old Ronaldo played the entire match and successfully converted his penalty kick.
Ronaldo posted:
We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each one of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honored and will continue to be built. Together.
Throughout Euro 2024, Ronaldo played in all five matches for Portugal, registering 23 shots on target but failing to score, thus setting a new record for most shots without a goal at World Cup and Euro tournaments.
