Real Madrid and Barcelona websites posted statements of condolence after the passing of Pope Francis.

"During his pontificate, marked by the dimension of his great legacy, Pope Francis has represented an enormous spirit of solidarity and support for the most underprivileged and vulnerable people. Rest in peace," stated the press release from Real Madrid.

"FC Barcelona expresses its condolences on the death of Pope Francis," said the statement from the Blaugrana.

It is worth noting that Pope Francis (formerly Jorge Mario Bergoglio) passed away at his residence in Vatican City on April 21. The pontiff, who had faced health issues in recent years, was 88 years old.

Earlier, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach expressed his condolences regarding Francis's death. Additionally, it was announced that five matches of the 29th round of the Polish football championship scheduled for April 21-22 would begin with a moment of silence. Four games from the 34th round of Italy's Serie A, planned for April 21, have been postponed due to the pontiff's passing.
