Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué's grandfather, Amador Bernabéu, has commented on the player's decision to end his career.

There's a lot of emotions, a mixture of negative feelings with positive ones and a lot of sadness. It's an ending we weren't expecting. I saw him happy and angry, because he was able to keep playing. Gerard can't be a bench player because of his character and lifestyle, he's just not used to sitting there after so many years of playing. Pique would never leave Barcelona because of the club's affairs. Like all of our family, he's been a Barcelona fan all his life - it's our life and our history. He would never leave Barcelona: the people are one thing, but the club is another. Laporta? Oh no, you won't make me. I'm not pointing fingers.

Amador Bernabéu, quoted by Sport.es

Piqué is a pupil of Barcelona. His record includes 28 trophies, including three Champions League titles. The Catalan played a total of 616 games for his native team and won 423 of them. Piqué is second only to Andrés Iniesta (459), Xavi (476), Sergio Busquets (482) and Lionel Messi (542) in terms of wins in Barcelona.
