Argentinian forward of Inter Miami, Lionel Messi, has become the most popular athlete in the United States, according to a survey by the company SSRS.
During the data collection, American fans aged 12 and older were surveyed. More than five percent of respondents voted for Messi.
This is the first time since SSRS was founded in 1995 that a footballer has become the most popular athlete. Previously, the top spot belonged to basketball player Michael Jordan.
Messi joined Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain on July 15 last year. He played 15 matches for the American club, scoring 11 goals and making six assists.
It was reported that MLS plans to attract another world football star to its league. It is also reported that Messi's club needs urgent salary reductions.
