Lothar Matthaus: Manuel Neuer Is Not the Support for Bayern Munich at the Moment

World Champion and former player for both Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, Lothar Matthaus, has commented on the performance of Munich’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer.

Matthaus was quoted by Bayern & Germany as saying:

I don’t mean Manuel any harm, but he’s not the support for the team at the moment like he was in the past. His goalkeeping has changed. He used to anticipate every situation, he had a 360-degree view, and he could initiate attacks with a build-up pass. At the moment he cannot give the defense any security. That’s also demonstrated by the rate of just over 40% of shots saved in the Bundesliga.

Neuer, 38, has a contract with Bayern Munich that runs until the end of June 2025. He is part of the 2014 World Cup-winning team from Germany and has been with Bayern since 2011. Together with the club, he has won two UEFA Champions League titles, 11 Bundesliga titles, five cups, and seven Super Cups.

In the 2014/2015 season, Neuer ranked third for the Ballon d'Or award, which was won by Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, with Argentina's Lionel Messi in second place.

It was recently reported that Bayern Munich plans to extend Neuer's contract, as noted by journalist Florian Plettenberg.
