Greek government official Pavlos Marinakis announced that the matches of the national football championship in the next two months will be held without spectators in the stands. This decision was made as a measure to deal with violent fans.

All Super League 1 matches will be played behind closed doors until Feb. 12, 2024. The measure might also apply to some European fixtures at home and could be extended beyond Feb. 12, if top league soccer teams fail to take action by that date.

On December 7, fans and police clashed during a volleyball match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. One police officer was injured, 400 people were detained.

Earlier, the referees refused to work at the matches of the Greek championship because of the actions of fans. For security reasons, France striker Kylian Mbappe remained in reserve for the match of qualifying for Euro 2024 against Greece.
