Head coach of the England national team Gareth Southgate has reacted to his team's defeat in the Euro 2024 final.

Goal quotes Southgate as saying:

We've competed until the very end of the final. I think today we didn't keep possession of the ball quite well enough. That said, we were still right in there when we got the equalizer, so the game was still wide open. A big chance at the end to equalize so as always it is fine margins. I do think they were the best team in the tournament.

On July 14, the English team was defeated by the Spanish national team with a score of 1-2 in the final match of the European Championship 2024 held at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The only goal for the British team was scored by midfielder Cole Palmer.

The loss in the European Championship final against Spain was the second in Southgate's career. The 53-year-old coach had previously led the English team during Euro 2020, where they lost the decisive match to Italy (1-1 in regular time and 2-3 in a penalty shootout).

Earlier reports indicated that the English Football Association plans to persuade Southgate to remain as the head coach of the national team after Euro 2024.
