FIFA President Gianni Infantino has spoken out about the killing of two Swedish fans before the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden.
The head of the organization expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims:
I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of two Swedish nationals in Brussels close to the stadium where Belgium were hosting Sweden in a UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match. On behalf of FIFA, and the global football family, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims. Our thoughts are with the people of Belgium and Sweden, their respective national team players and football associations.
Recall, the crime was committed on October 16. Belgian police quickly found the suspect, but he was shot and died in the ambulance on the way to the intensive care unit.
The match was terminated after the first half with the score 1-1.
