Welsh club Cardiff City will file a lawsuit against French club Nantes demanding a payment of €120 million, as reported by RMC Sport citing L'Equipe.
The demand is related to Argentine forward Emiliano Sala, who tragically died in January 2019. Sala had transferred from Nantes to Cardiff City but passed away in a plane crash two days after the official announcement of the transfer.
To accurately determine the amount, Cardiff City has consulted Analytics FC, a data analytics company, to assess the likelihood of Cardiff staying in the English Premier League with Sala on the team. Assuming Sala would have played 60% of the matches, the company calculated the club's chances of remaining in the league at 54.2%.
Additionally, the demand is based on loss of revenue between the 2018/2019 and 2022/2023 seasons, estimated at 52.9 million euros, as well as a loss of value estimated at 67.3 million. Cardiff City also seeks 2 million euros for reputational damage.
It is worth noting that Nantes has also filed a lawsuit against Cardiff City for moral damages.
Previously, English club Nottingham Forest appealed against a 4-point deduction for fair play violations, and the Premier League returned four of the ten points deducted from Everton for financial misconduct by the club.
