Birmingham City's press service has announced that 37-year-old Wayne Rooney has been appointed as the team's new head coach. Previously, the former Manchester United and England striker was in charge of American club D.C. United.

Rooney's assistants will be his former England teammate Ashley Cole and former MU teammate John O'Shea. The contract is designed for three years.

Birmingham plays in the Championship (the second strongest division in England after the EPL) and is in 6th place, with 18 points in 11 matches. Rooney has experience in England, where he previously coached Derby County.

Wayne Rooney worked at D.C. United since July 2022 and failed to lead the team to the MLS playoffs, then left the club. It is reported that the parties terminated the contract by mutual agreement.

Earlier Rooney said that the main reason why he became a coach is his desire to lead Manchester United in the future.
