Borussia Dortmund and Belgium defender Thomas Meunier has spoken out about the International Football Federation's (FIFA) ban on the field wearing rainbow captain's armbands at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

We wanted to use that armband, we discussed it with each other. In the end we had to give up the idea. It's a shame. There are a lot of differences between local and European culture, and we have to accept that. If we wanted to do something properly, we wouldn't have come to Qatar, but now it's too late.

Thomas Meunier to L'Equipe

The Belgian team will play in Group F at the World Cup, running from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18, 2022 in Qatar. Group F also includes teams from Canada, Morocco and Croatia.

On Nov. 23, the Belgian national team will face Canada in the first round of the group stage. The starting whistle of the meeting will sound at 19:00 GMT.
