According to the BBC, seven Serbian fans were arrested following a clash with English fans in Germany before the first round match of the 2024 European Championship.
One of the fans is facing criminal charges for causing serious bodily harm. For safety reasons, the stadium only sold low-alcohol beer during the game, and fans from the two teams were kept separate. Approximately a thousand police officers were on duty on the streets of Germany as part of a large-scale operation to maintain order.
The match ended with a tight score of 1-0 in favor of the English national team. In the second round of the group stage, the English team will face Denmark, while the Serbians will play against Slovenia on June 20.
Prior to the match, The Guardian reported that British fans attacked a bar in Gelsenkirchen where Serbian fans were resting. The Football Association of England (FA) stated that fans behaving inappropriately may be stripped of tickets for Euro 2024 matches.
