BBC, citing data from the company Deloitte, reports that the teams of the English Premier League (EPL) set a record for spending at the end of the summer transfer window, spending a total of €2.36 billion.
The total expenditures of the twenty clubs of the elite English football division during the summer transfer period broke the previous record of last year (€1.92 billion). On the final day of the window, August 31, the EPL clubs splurged €255 million, which doubles the mark of €120 million spent on the last day of the summer transfer window in 2022.
The purchases of new players in the EPL accounted for almost half of the total spending in the top five leagues in Europe (48%). Apart from the English league, this includes Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A, Germany's Bundesliga and France's Ligue 1.
