Italian boxer Angela Carini, competing in the under-66 kg weight class, opted to withdraw from her round of 16 bout against Algerian representative Imane Helif, who had failed a gender test.
According to il Fatto Quotidiano, just 46 seconds into the first round, Carini informed her corner that Helif was delivering exceptionally painful punches. Carini also suspects she may have a broken nose.
After Helif was declared the winner, Carini was seen crying in the ring.
