The World Boxing Association (WBA) has announced that Ryan Garcia and Rolando Romero will face off on May 3 in New York, where they will compete for the vacant welterweight championship title.

Garcia's last fight was against Devin Haney in April 2024, where he initially won by majority decision. However, he was later disqualified for one year due to a failed drug test, which resulted in the cancelling of his victory over Haney. Garcia's professional record stands at 24 wins (20 by knockout) and 1 loss.

Romero last stepped into the ring against Manuel Jaimes in September 2024. That fight went the distance and concluded with a unanimous decision in favor of Rolando. His record includes 16 wins (13 by knockout) and 2 losses.
