Twitter users in France turned to Second World War codes to get round a ban on commenting on presidential elections last month.

The social network's users covered their tracks in a series of messages referring to football matches, Russian tanks, and even food, after authorities threatened fines of $99,403 (75,000 euros) for breaching a ban on reporting results before polls closed.

Users likened the tweets to coded messages sent to the French resistance during the war.
