ZTE has announced the world’s first SIM-based NFC mobile device to be used toll payments in Turkey.

Launched in January this year and available on Turkcell T11 (also known as the ZTE Racer II), the service is supported by Turkey’s largest mobile operator, Turkcell.

Turkcell T11 can be used to swipe bank POS machines and highway toll payment points and pay for products and services. Turkey already has over 60,000 contactless payment points and is leading the world in mobile commerce innovation.

Turkcell T11 is powered by Android 2.2 Froyo and an ARM processor running at over 600MHz. It comes with 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM and 200MB of internal memory. Multi-tasking on the phone is smooth. For example, the phone does not slow or delay when opening a map, using handwriting recognition and chatting simultaneously.

“People always carry mobile phones with them and Turkcell T11 is able to provide a friendly interface and rich interactive features that enable customers to use their handsets in new and innovative ways. ZTE offers a number of NFC handsets around the world, and in Japan we have products that support Felica. Our next target is Europe, and the product we offer with Turkcell has already seen strong success,” said Kan Yulun, VP and CTO of ZTE’s handset division.
