Google-owned user-generated video aggregator YouTube announced the launch of a new mobile website optimized for smartphones including the iPhone, the Palm Pre and the Android G1.
"Just visit youtube.com from your mobile phone, and you'll be taken to a new website specially designed for your device," writes product manager Dwipal Desai on The YouTube Blog. "You can log into your account, view your favorites, and discover and share new videos quickly and easily with whoever you choose."
The YouTube smartphone site follows on the heels of Google's announcement it will acquire video compression software and solutions developer On2 Technologies, a stock-for-stock transaction valued at $106.5 million. On2 creates compression technologies that power desktop and mobile video applications--the firm's customers include Nokia, Adobe, Sun Microsystems, Skype, Sony and Brightcove.
