Fast-growing Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has claimed a Guinness World Record after selling 2.11 million handsets during a 24-hour period.
The company hold a one-day sale to mark its fifth anniversary, and sold 2.08 billion yuan ($335 million) worth of handsets and accessories during this time, Press Trust of Indiareported.
Guinness World Records certified the record and the sales were audited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Xiaomi handily beat its own previous record of selling 1.3 million smartphones during the same event last year, and even surpassed the previous record set by Alibaba, which sold 1.89 million handsets during China's Singles' Day sales in November.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun told Chinese media that the sales were beyond the company's internal expectations.
In December, Xiaomi raised over $1 billion in a funding round which valued the company at $45 billion. The company has rapidly risen to become the world's third largest smartphone vendor by unit shipments behind Apple and Samsung, according to IDC estimates.
