Xiaomi has launched Mi3, its latest flagship 3G smartphone, in Hong Kong, as the fast-growing Chinese handset maker continues its oversea foray.

The company has teamed up with Hutchison Telecom to exclusively sell the new Mi3 in the city through the telco’s mobile operation, 3 Hong Kong.

Amy Lung, managing director of mobile operations at Hutchison Telecom, said more than 60% of the company’s 3G and 4G postpaid customers are now using smart devices and expected the Mi3 will help boost smartphone penetration rate.

"Smartphones with a highly-favorable price-to-performance ratio are hugely popular…we believe competitively-priced high specification smartphones, such as the Mi3, will attract even more users to smartphones," Lung said.

The Mi3 is the second smartphone Xiaomi has launched in Hong Kong. Previously the company has sold the mid-range Hongmi through Hutchison Telecom and PCCW-HKT.

Xiaomi global vice president Hugo Barra said the Mi3 is the fastest smartphone the company ever launched. The phone runs on Android 4.3 and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 8274AB 2.3GHz quad-core processor and comes with a range of features such as personalized themes, lockscreen choices, the exclusive Mi sound system and a full HD IPS screen.

Xiaomi launched the Mi3 with Far EasTone in Taiwan last month and in Singapore through the three cellcos in the city-state earlier this month.

Barra, who joined Xiaomi from Google last year, said the company will also roll out products in Malaysia in next few weeks, as part of its overseas expansion plans.

“We started with markets which are closer and similar to China,” Barra told reporters at a media briefing in Hong Kong.
