Vivendi predicts over $4b profit for 2011
Vivendi has forecast a full-year profit of over €3 billion ($4.28 billion) after its Q1 profit surged to €1.73 billion, from €589 million in 1Q10, largely due to a €1.2 billion windfall from resolving a battle with Deutsche Telekom in Poland.
LimeWire settles piracy suit for $105m
LimeWire has agreed to pay $105 million to settle the copyright infringement lawsuit it was fighting against 13 record companies – a far cry from the up to $75 trillion that record companies had estimated they were owed.
Disconnect order shrinks Zimbabwe teledensity
Zimbabwean mobile operators have lost large numbers of subscribers as a result of a regulatory order to disconnect unregistered numbers – Econet Wireless has alone lost 1.4 million customers in three months, and the nation's teledensity has fallen to 49.7% from 67.5%.
Japan's mobile subscriptions surpassed 120 million for the first time in April, with Softbank leading the charge with 239,300 net adds during the month.
AT&T, T-Mobile USA quizzed over merger plan
The CEOs of AT&T and T-Mobile USA have defended the companies' planned $39 billion merger in front of a US senate subcommittee to evaluate the deal. AT&T will reportedly give Deutsche Telekom around $6 billion worth of assets, services and cash as a break fee, if regulators reject the proposal.
Facebook denies planning Google smear campaign
Facebook hired a PR firm to try to persuade journalists to write stories claiming that Google's Social Circles feature violates user privacy, without the firm disclosing the social network's involvement. But Facebook denied claims that this constitutes a “smear campaign.”
Ericsson completes purchase of Nortel's China JV
Ericsson has completed the $50 million acquisition of Nortel's stake in its Guangdong Nortel Telecommunications Equipment Company joint venture with Chinese firms. The venture will now adopt the Ericsson brand.
Software piracy losses near $59b: trade group
Trade group Business Software Alliance has estimated that $58.8 billion worth of software was pirated last year, with emerging markets including China, India, Brazil and Russia now accounting for more than half of the calculated losses.
