Vietnamese carrier Viettel is looking for expansion opportunities in Africa, to build on the launch of mobile and fiber networks in Mozambique.

The firm claims its Movitel mobile network, which opened for business this week, offers twice the coverage required in its operating license, and that its fiber network pitches Mozambique into the top three sub Saharan Africa countries in terms of coverage.

“Mozambique is Viettel’s first market in Africa,” a spokesman says, adding. ”Viettel is seeking for new opportunities to expand its investment in other African countries.”

Viettel’s fiber network spans 12,600km – equivalent to 70% of Mozambique’s total fiber coverage - and it has constructed 1,800 mobile base stations – roughly half the nation’s mobile infrastructure. The carrier claims to be among the world’s top 15 in terms of subscriber numbers, with a user base of 60 million in six countries.
