Thailand's TrueMove has revealed plans to wind up 2G mobile services if it wins spectrum in the upcoming auctions.
The Bangkok Postcites CEO Suphachai Chearavanont as stating that the company aims to secure 25 MHz of 1800-MHz spectrum during the August auction to improve its 3G services.
The operator currently provides 3G over 850-MHz through subsidiary Real Move and 3G over 2100-MHz via subsidiary Real Future.
Of course, TrueMove may not have much choice but to shut down 2G services following the auction, as the 25 MHz of 1800-MHz spectrum it had been using for 2G is among the spectrum assets due to be sold through three 3G/4G spectrum auctions between August 2014 and September 2015.
TrueMove had been using the spectrum under its concession agreement with state-owned CAT Telecom. This agreement expired in September, but TrueMove was given a one year extension to migrate its 2G customers off the spectrum.
According to the Post, the operator still has around 10 million 2G subscribers that need to be migrated onto 3G by August, but this is down from 17 million in October.
