(Bangkok Post via NewsEdge) Sky Office, a unit of True, has secured approval from Thailand's National Telecommunications Commission to use a submarine cable and lease circuits for service providers after getting a license to offer international gateway services.
Sky Office is the first private operator to receive the license, which is valid for five years. NTC chairman, Gen Choochart Promprasit said the awarding of the license would contribute greatly to market competition because it would give operators more opportunities to lease better quality and more appropriately priced services.
Sky Office will provide a connection service between IIGs and domestic Internet gateways by using a submarine cable network and leased circuits from overseas.
However, all outgoing traffic will still have to be routed through CAT Telecom's international gateway.
True chief executive Supachai Chearavanont said Sky Office would initially invest 200 million baht ($5.3 million) to establish connections with all Internet networks. It would begin providing four services by the fourth quarter of this year: international IP transit, domestic Internet exchange, international private leased circuits, and international IP virtual private networks.
